White Flakes or Scale: Causes and Fixes

Updated 2026-05-22

White scaly buildup on tile, light rings, or floating flakes in the water comes from one of three sources. All of them are chemistry related and reversible if caught early.

Why it happens

Calcium scale (high pH and CH)

When calcium hardness goes above 400 ppm and pH drifts above 7.8, calcium precipitates out and sticks to tile and equipment.

Hot tub or spa with bad balance

Spas heat water fast which accelerates scale formation. White flakes in a spa nearly always mean high calcium or pH.

Salt cell scaling (salt pools only)

Salt cells produce calcium scale on the plates. The scale flakes off into the pool when the cell cycles.

How to fix it

1

Test CH and pH

CH target 200 to 400 ppm, pH 7.2 to 7.6. Above either threshold drives scale.

2

Lower pH first

Sodium bisulfate or muriatic acid in small doses. Re-test daily until pH holds at 7.4.

3

If CH is above 500, partial drain and refill

There is no chemical that lowers calcium hardness reliably. Drain 25 to 50 percent and refill with softer water.

4

Salt cell: acid cleaning every 3 to 6 months

1:4 muriatic acid to water in a clean bucket, 15 to 30 minute soak.

FAQ

Is calcium scale dangerous to swim in?

Not dangerous, but it scratches and clouds the water. Long term it damages tile grout and equipment.

Can I just brush the scale off the tile?

Light scale yes, with a stiff brush. Heavy scale needs acid wash and is best left to a professional.

Does a softener on the fill water help?

Yes long term. Even one fill with hardness above 400 ppm pushes you into scale territory.
